Start with a page from your own newsroom
Use a local report with a long institution name, a two-line heading and a short photo caption. Check it at print size rather than judging only the enlarged screen.
Prepare the approved story, headline, byline, caption, image credit and edition date together. In XLR8, assemble the page, review the generated layout and make corrections before exporting. Three checks before you approve the page
Check chillus and joined forms
Proof words containing chillu letters and conjuncts in your selected font. If older copy has been converted to Unicode, compare the converted words with the source before you start fitting them into columns.
Do not solve every overflow by shrinking text
A long word or name may need a wider frame or an editorial rewrite of the heading. Check the resulting reading order, and leave enough vertical room for vowel signs in tightly set paragraphs.
Read the smallest text first
Start the final proof with captions, credits and notices. Check that their font is embedded or otherwise handled as your printer requires, and that the exported PDF preserves the intended words and spacing.

Read the PDF, not just the editor
Check names, numerals, photographs, adverts and page size again in the exported PDF. Send one representative page to your printer before producing a complete edition. Use the printer’s requested export settings; increasing a DPI number will not restore detail missing from a source image.
