Common Hindi Newspaper Printing Challenges

Printing Hindi newspapers presents unique challenges due to Devanagari script complexity. Here are the most common issues and their solutions.

Problem 1: Shirorekha Breaking

Issue: The horizontal line (shirorekha) above Hindi characters breaks or appears inconsistent.

Causes:

  • Low-quality fonts without proper OpenType features
  • Incorrect PDF export settings
  • Font not embedded in PDF
  • Printing press resolution too low

Solutions:

  1. Use professional Unicode fonts like Noto Sans Devanagari, Lohit Hindi, or Mangal
  2. Always embed fonts when exporting PDF
  3. Export at minimum 300 DPI resolution
  4. Use PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 standards for printing
  5. Test print before full run

Problem 2: Color Registration Issues

Issue: Colors don't align properly, creating blurry or offset text and images.

Solutions:

  • Use 100% black (K100) for body text, not rich black (C/M/Y/K mix)
  • Avoid small text in multiple colors
  • Set proper trapping in design software
  • Communicate with press operator about registration marks
  • Keep critical text away from page edges (5mm safety margin)

Problem 3: Matras Not Displaying Correctly

Issue: Vowel marks (matras) appear in wrong positions or missing.

Solutions:

  • Ensure font has complete character set (check with Character Map)
  • Enable OpenType features in design software
  • Use Unicode-compliant fonts only
  • Avoid legacy Krutidev or similar fonts

XLR8 Print Pre-Flight Check:

Our templates come with print-ready settings and pre-configured PDF export presets. This eliminates 90% of common printing problems before they occur.

Problem 4: Paper Quality Affecting Readability

Solutions:

  • Use minimum 45 GSM newsprint for acceptable quality
  • Increase font weight slightly for low-quality paper
  • Avoid very light colors or fine details on poor paper
  • Test different paper suppliers for best price-quality balance

Pre-Print Checklist

  1. Check all fonts are embedded (File > Properties in Adobe Reader)
  2. Verify resolution is 300 DPI minimum
  3. Confirm color mode is CMYK, not RGB
  4. Review shirorekha continuity at 200% zoom
  5. Check trim marks and bleed (3mm minimum)
  6. Print test page to verify quality

Conclusion

Most Hindi printing problems can be prevented with proper file preparation. Invest time in correct setup once, and save hours of troubleshooting daily.
